A word of warning for any Canadians looking to join our neighbors to the South for Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day — if you’re planning to stay in Washington D.C., you’ll be paying a lot more than you bargained for.

Data from has found that hotel rates for the event have become astronomical. The average price for a room in America’s capital has risen to $2,071/night per January 20th, a 927% increase when compared to the week prior to inauguration.

Hotel rates are historically low in Washington D.C. for January. The trivago Hotel Price Index (tHPI) recorded an average nightly rate of $204 USD ($283 CAD) in 2016, second only to December 2016 with rates of $197 USD ($262 CAD) per night.

NOTE: Unfortunately, as trivago had not yet entered the U.S. market when President Barack Obama was first inaugurated in January 2009, we are unable to provide hotel rates for the event.
